Hope Beneath Our Feet : October 14, 2018

"Hope beneath our feet- Urban farming as a way to embody ecological sensibilities " - a presentation by Deborah Dutta.
Deborah is a doctoral student at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, India. Her research focuses on developing educational interventions that can motivate students to take up environment-oriented actions at the community level. She joined the Urban Leaves Community in June 2015 as she embarked on her research.

As she draws to the final stages of her thesis, the UL community was keen to hear her conclusions and have a discussion on the same. And as we set about planning for it, we realised that the world needs to hear her and hence opened up the event to public.

The talk is about connections. Connections that urban spaces often obscure or take for granted. Connections, the experience of which is essential for understanding our relationship with nature and the path ahead. The talk will be grounded in Deborah's experience and reflections of engaging with urban farming communities. Through different examples and supporting literature, she will try to describe how sustained engagement with farming can lead to participation in wider pro-environmental actions. This narrative will also argue that healing the environment is an integral process of community well-being rather than just an altruistic set of actions. In other words, environmental restoration is also an act of “re-story-ation” where we can write, and tell each other different stories of our relationship with nature.
