PARENT-CHILD HEALTHY COOKING WORKSHOP ON 4TH JANUARY 2015 [REGISTRATIONS CLOSED]

Moms and dads, daughters and sons,
Cook your way to health and fun!
Know the best way to cook and eat,

Fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds!
Explore the colours, flavours and tastes,
Not just for good health but also slim
waists!!

When was the last time you or your kid gulped down those crispy fries? Do you remember the last time you eagerly looked at the clock to track those “30 minutes”, awaiting your pizza delivery? I do. I had a full value meal last month and a small chicken pizza with a big bottle of coke day before.
Do you remember how you felt after having your meal? What did you do after? Did you sleep? Or did you work? I went to bed almost immediately, cause I was so felt so full, bloated and drained of energy. So the next day, at moms insistence I had a huge bowl of salad before lunch, and yummy green leafy veggie with hot rotis. Do you know what I did after? I travelled to college; returned home after tiring (read boring) lectures, played a game of badminton and now I’m writing this post. I’m sure most people have a similar experience, but fail to notice the difference their meals have on their body.

I’ve seen so many mothers tell their kids to restrict eating junk. To all those dear loving moms: have you ever told them what to eat? And why to eat it? Children have amazing reasoning and grasping  powers. They ask intelligent questions. And when they don’t get satisfactory answers, they’re bound to overlook what you’ve said.  When you tell them what not to, you’ve also got to tell them why. In addition, you’ve also got to tell them what they should do and why.

We at Urban Leaves believe reaping what we sow and eating what we grow. Explore the wonders of healthy food preparation and eating with your child in our workshop.
If you think there’s no other way to spend time with your kid apart from eating at a restaurant or hitting the movies, here you go! Perk up your child's interest in health and food. Children are motivated to eat healthy when they are involved in the preparation of the food they eat. Have fun and bond with your child while preparing food that is not only healthy, but also very very tasty!

Thank us when your kid cooks you a lovely salad after you’ve had a tiring day at work :D

From the eyes of a volunteer of a children's workshop

There we were, wondering if the little ones, an age group of 4 to 7 years, would be up for farm work, for getting their hands down and dirty. They walked around the farm at MNP, counting the custard apples on the tree and marveling at the pineapple, before settling down to learn how to make a self-watering can and what the plants needed to survive and grow. Sure, plant food is great but can we do some experiments, they said happily mixing the soil and compost, sticking the stickers on the cans and asking when they could sow some seeds in the beds.

Seeds go down....

Salad making and squashing tomatoes? Bring it on, the kids seemed to say after they’d all planted some spinach in their containers and headed to the Seva café to make and eat some breakfast.

Squashing tomatoes!!

There were also beds to be made but the summer sun was beating down and we thought they’d be tired. Surprisingly, most hung around, including the tiniest who after having enthusiastically pish-pashed tomatoes, dug-up dirt and helped carry buckets of it to fill up a bed.

Bed-making ...do we sleep in it after ...

We think it’s safe to bet that they’ll be back to check on the bhindi and corn seeds they sowed. And teach us that children can farm too.

WORKSHOP ON PRUNING OF PLANTS ON 25TH MAY 2014

In our continuing quest to expand our knowledge of taking proper care of plants, we are pleased to announce a Workshop on Pruning of plants. Proper pruning of trees/plants has a major impact on their growth and productivity. Properly pruned trees/plants are likely to have greater strength, health and productivity than trees that are not pruned, especially on urban rooftop farms.

The Prayog Parivar has through experiments and keen observation, mastered the art of pruning trees. It is our endeavour to share this knowledge with urban farmers/gardeners.

SPEAKER:
Shri. Deepak Suchde
The workshop will be conducted by Shri Deepak Suchde who is the CEO of the Malpani Trust, Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. Taking inspiration from Dr. Shripad Dabholkar, the father of Natueco Farming, Shri Deepak Suchde has been practicing Natueco Farming for the last 20 years. He is currently working at the Krushi Tirth farm on the banks of river Narmada at Bajwada in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. He will be sharing the knowledge gained by him from the experiments of various prayog parivar members and his experience on the farm. Use the links below to know more about his work. http://www.beyondorganicfarming.in/
