VEGETABLE DIVERSITY & SEED-SAVING TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP : 10TH MARCH, 2019

Losing a plant can threaten a culture in much the same way as losing a language.                                                                                                             ~ Robin Wall Kimmerer

As Indians, many of us would not know what to do if we were to lose our rice or mango varieties? How would children visit their parents' and grandparents' favourite mango trees, sit and listen to stories of summers gone by? How would those khichadi, pulao and biryani recipes get passed down the generations? What would we do for our festivals and celebrations?

As farmers, many of us are stuck when it comes to sourcing seed, saving seed and sharing seed. What varieties to use, what not to? When? Where? How? Why? We have so many questions.

We at Urban Leaves have asked Deepika to share with us, her learnings around seed-saving and vegetable diversity from over two-and-a-half decades on Pebble Garden, Auroville. She has preserved more than 90 traditionally-bred varieties in her small garden of 2000 square meters and together with Bernard Declercq has regenerated 7 acres of land into a vibrant forest. If you have some experience, farming in or around Mumbai, we invite you to learn with us.
